This stunning 3,529 sq. ft. 5BR, 4BA walkout rambler offers “up north” views with all the creature comforts, yet is extremely energy efficient, healthy, safe, durable and comfortable.
Built to the Department of Energy’s Challenge Home standards, this custom designed, passive–solar home demonstrates super energy efficiency that is not boring or expensive. This Challenge Home program is intended to attract the top 1% across the country building to the highest standards. This home is the first in Minnesota to meet the "challenge".
The shallow depth, south-facing lot is perfectly suited for the needs of a passive solar designed home that required a minimum of 11% glazing to the south. The long, shallow home design was created to accommodate the real estate needs of the planned 10.5kw solar voltaic system, which will meet nearly all the homes electrical needs.
The viewing deck draws you out for a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening, but it and the overhangs were actually designed to shade the south facing windows through summer months and let the sun shine in the colder months. The thermal mass concrete floors and tile on both levels absorbs winter sun keeping the house cooler during the day and warm at night. The targeted HERS score for this home is less than 10 and the cost to operate $40.00+/- per month.
The barrier free front entry and oversized interior doors accommodate wheel chair access and the master shower offers a zero barrier walk in shower, all for age in place possibilities. The main floor features single level living with master suite and a second bedroom, smartly located in the rear to offer more privacy and south facing sun light, which can be configured as a study, guest bedroom, snore room, morning sitting area or design studio.
The main living area redefines the open concept by implementing a 7’ tall furniture type dividing wall to create separation between living room and kitchen. However, the 10’ ceilings let’s your eye connect the spaces for a feeling of the larger space.
The kitchen is a cooks dream with 9’ prep island, two professional style 30”stoves (8 burners, 2 ovens total) and a 66” wide pro-style refrigerator-freezer that boasts tons of storage space. The kitchen has separate, well-defined clean up and cooking stations and an efficient pantry that can fit almost anything. The under counter wine caddy and draw microwave keeps the counters uncluttered and clean.
The lower level offers flexible configuration possibilities for today’s changing lifestyles. The Jack and Jill bedrooms are ideal for teenage kids or the boomerang adult child with baby. The oversized fifth bedroom is an ideal home office or mother in-law bedroom (with conversion of the ½ bath to full bath). If that is not enough, there is an unfinished space that can be configured for the one thing we didn’t think of.
